Helga E Wall-Row Raw – her life

I was privileged to know Helga for 25 years and even more honoured to have written her obituary in The Times (8th March 2023). I spent 4 weeks after her death on 8th February 2023 researching her life including being incarcerated aged 18 in a concentration camp by the Nazis just for liking jazz. She was one of the Hamburg Swingjugend, the Swing Kids, who were declared anti-German and seditious by Joseph Goebbels the propaganda minister. She survived, married a dashing British officer, became an actress and model and lived the rest of her life in London. Her third husband, 2003 to 2022, was Charles Raw, financial journalist and author, my wife Susie’s brother.

The research from which the obituary was drawn is available here to download and read. In the last few years, facts about the Swing Kids and resistance to Nazism have become available on the internet, and I have become adept at Ancestry.com and internet searches. Charles Raw was a remarkable man; his obituary was written by writer and financial journalist Magnus Linklater from research provided by me. https://marcusbicknell.files.wordpress.com/2023/03/charles-raw-obit-the-times-19-december-2022.pdf
